What Betting Odds Actually Tell You

A betting odds figure does two jobs at once: it tells you what a winning bet pays, and it tells you how likely the market thinks that outcome is. Shorter odds mean the outcome is seen as more likely and pay less relative to your stake. Longer odds mean the opposite — less likely, bigger payout if it lands. Decimal, Fractional and American — Same Number, Three Formats

Odds are one number written three different ways, and you can switch the display format from your account settings so the numbers read however you’re used to seeing them.

Decimal

Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked, stake included. Odds of 2.50 on a $10 bet return $25 if it wins — that’s $15 profit plus your $10 stake back.

Fractional

Fractional odds show profit relative to stake. 6/4 means you win $6 for every $4 staked, plus your stake back. It’s the format most associated with UK racing and football coverage.

American

American odds are written as a positive or negative number relative to a $100 stake. +150 means a $100 bet profits $150; -150 means you need to stake $150 to profit $100. The minus sign marks the favorite, not a fee.

Why a Price Moves Before You Click Confirm

Odds shift as money moves on a market and as team news lands — a lineup change or a late scratch can move a price within minutes of kickoff.
